1988

We introduce a discretionary Supported Open Employment (SOE) fund. Strict qualifying criteria means many individuals are excluded from existing government programmes. Where this is the case, we fi ll in the gaps. Our SOE funding offers people advice and assistance with education and training, writing CVs and interview techniques, as well as fi nding work opportunities and identifying skills and aspirations.

1989

Following the success of our centre in Hereford, a similar Shaw Trust Centre is established for people with learning disabilities in Enfield.

Shaw Trust Employment Project (STEP) in Wiltshire is set up to provide project-based training for people with special employment needs who are long-term unemployed – teaching new skills, inspiring self-confi dence and promoting self-reliance. It covers offi ce administration, conservation, horticulture, and tool and machinery restoration.

The fi rst Employment Rehabilitation Service (ERS) contract is negotiated. Experienced placement offi cers with good marketing skills negotiate work trials based on individuals’ skills and abilities. Clients get work experience and an opportunity to improve their social and communication skills in the workplace. Shaw Trust’s appointment by the Department of Employment as an agent for ERS is a major achievement in terms of recognition and reputation.

Development of our infrastructure doesn’t keep pace with our rapid growth and development. A rocky patch follows with a £7 million turnover, but no surplus. Introduction of a computer based management system brings improvements.

We work with the government to change the Workstep model. People supported into work by Shaw Trust are transferred from our payroll onto their employer’s. This has a positive effect on our effi ciency and cash fl ow. Shaw Trust started out working with smaller, local companies, now we are in a position to work with much larger employers.

Shaw Trust is supporting more people with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds back into work, year on year.
