1992
We celebrate our 10th anniversary at the Barbican Centre in London, in partnership with the National Youth Brass Band, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The anniversary concert takes the theme of 'Ability'.
1994
Mental health projects are set up in Essex, Kent and Lincolnshire, and Resource for Employment Access and Continuous Training (REACT) is established in Hereford and Worcester, to offer support and assistance for people with mental health problems.
1995
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 is introduced. The new law says it is wrong and unfair to discriminate against employees on the grounds of their disability – something we have been saying for more than a decade.
The DDA changes the way Shaw Trust works. It helps us build relationships with prospective employers, dispel myths and highlight the needs of disabled people. It also marks a stronger impetus from government to support people to move from benefi ts into work. We begin to work in specifi c areas with high numbers of people on benefi ts.
Shaw Trust begins to receive funding from the National Lottery to develop our activities in local communities.
Director General Tim Pape is awarded the OBE. He said: "The award is a public recognition of all that Shaw Trust has achieved and is due very much to the joint efforts of all the staff, trainees, supporting agencies and fi rms pulling together to create an organisation dedicated to working with disabled people."
We become the first national charity to receive the Investors in People Standard.
The fi rst Shaw Trust charity shop opens in Princes Risborough. As well as donated second-hand clothes, our shops sell new goods, including items made by people with disabilities. They promote our work and generate revenue enabling us to secure even more jobs for disadvantaged people.
We begin working with school leavers with learning diffi culties to prepare for the world of work. We help fi nd students, aged from 16 to 18, work placements with a variety of employers including nursing homes, a DIY store and a hospital.
