Working in partnership with Headway, Shaw Trust starts supporting people with brain injury back into work.
Opportunities arise to tender for new services in local authorities, health trusts and Jobcentre Plus. Shaw Trust wins a handful of projects for private companies too.
Falklands veteran Simon Weston offi cially launches the Shaw Start programme in the Thames Valley. It provides pre-job preparation training – everything from IT to independent living skills for people with sensory impairments or physical disabilities.
Shaw Trust keeps up with the internet revolution, launching our TIME project. TIME gives people with disabilities the opportunity to develop their IT skills. We develop this service in partnership with Birmingham City Council and organisations from four other European countries.
Following the Disability Discrimination Act, many employers are left with the misconception that offering work to a disabled person is expensive because of adjustments that might be needed. Our ShawNet Information service is launched so we can share useful experiences and knowledge, such as information about adjustments in the workplace, of employing people with disabilities.
Shaw Trust joins the International Organisation for the Provision of Work for Handicapped Persons (IPWH). By joining the group, our aim is to share our experience of supporting disabled people into open employment.
Shaw Trust also joins Rehabilitation International, a network of people with disabilities, service providers, researchers, government agencies and organisations like us from around the world. The network's aim is to 'promote and implement the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities'.
These moves mark the beginning of a more international perspective for Shaw Trust.

Our work steers towards getting people furthest removed from the labour market into work so they can enjoy the advantages work brings. Building on our knowledge and experience of working with clients who are further removed from the labour market, we develop a new model of employment support which works for disadvantaged and disabled people. This allows us to support more people.
