Human Rights Act is passed by Parliament.
Following the election of a Labour government in 1997 the New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP) is introduced. The programme aims to assist people receiving benefi ts to return to work by providing training, subsidised employment and voluntary work.
For the fi rst time, Shaw Trust tenders for Workstep.
A fundraising appeal for Palmer Gardens raises £180,000 for a new training centre which is opened by HRH Princess Alexandra.
1999
Disability Rights Commission Act is passed by Parliament.
Lowestoft 'Into Work' programme is launched. Our first major project managing Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) funding and its distribution to other local community groups and organisations. It is unusual – and a massive step forward for Shaw Trust – for a charity to be responsible for administering government funding to help regeneration programmes.
Shaw Trust wins contracts to deliver two NDDP Personal Adviser Pilot schemes in Tyneside and Newham. This achievement is a signifi cant milestone in us becoming a major provider of government funded employment programmes.
2000
Our fi rst Disability Action Centre (DAC) opens in Neath. It is constructed using European Regional Development Funding and other fundraised income and is designed to be totally accessible ensuring everyone is able to visit and access our services. A number of projects and initiatives are housed within the DAC including: Direct Payments Service, Karten Centre Accessible Technology Training service, Shaw Start Personal Development Training Services (for people with Physical Disabilities and Sensory Impairments), Disabled Living Centre Services, Shaw Trust Employment Support Services including Work Preparation, Workstep and New Deal for Disabled People, RNIB Employment Support Services and RNID Communication Service Unit and RNID Employment Support Services.
Shaw Trust secures its position as one of the top four performers of the NDDP Personal Adviser service having more than doubled our job outcomes, securing employment for nearly 800 people. A key feature of our services in Tyneside and Newham is our working relationship with the Benefits Agency and Employment Service.
