Digital Champions

Would you like to become a Digital Champion in your community?

FREE training and support is available to not-for-profit organisations.

The world of digital technology is changing all the time, including the way we access information and how we communicate with each other – such as the internet, email, social networking and mobile phones.

If you want to make sure you are not left behind and that your community does not miss out on opportunities, then the Digital Champions programme is for you.

The Institute of Digital Innovation and Shaw Trust can help you to:
  • gain a better understanding of digital technology and how it can benefit community, voluntary and charity groups
  • learn about using different types of digital technology
  • find new ways to communicate, access information and engage with your audiences

How does the Digital Champions programme work?

Stage 1

Digital Champions receive free training in different aspects of digital technology, such as:

• websites • blogging • wikis • digital photography • pod and vodcasts
• community radio and film • animation

We also offer a short course to build your confidence and develop the skills to teach others within your organisation.

Stage 2

Digital Champions are supported to pass their learning on, tackling the digital divide in their local communities. This could involve organising an informal drop-in session about blogging or even arranging a day of filming to promote your community group’s activities.

Full support is provided throughout by a Shaw Trust tutor – continuing after completion of the course.

The training is free of charge, with a commitment to completing both stages of the programme.

Who can become a Digital Champion?

The programme is available if you:
  • live or work in the North East
  • are committed to learning about digital technology and then passing on this knowledge to others within your community
  • are a member of a not-for-profit organisation such as a community group, voluntary organisation or charity
You won’t need previous digital experience or qualifications.

Where will the training take place?

The programme will take place at a range of fully-accessible venues throughout the North East.
