Local MPs show support for charity’s employment services

4 November 2010

National employment charity Shaw Trust is looking forward to welcoming local MPs Iain Stewart (MP Milton Keynes South) and Mark Lancaster (MP Milton Keynes North) to its Milton Keynes offices on Friday 5th November, to find out more about the support services on offer to people in the region.

Katherine Conner, Shaw Trust District Manager, says:
“Clients will be on-hand to talk to our MPs about their success in gaining employment, whether it be through placements which have led onto paid employment, becoming self-employed by setting up their own businesses, or embarking on job-focused training schemes. There will also be a number of local employers who will be explaining the success of their partnership with Shaw Trust, and the benefits of being supplied with job-ready candidates.”

Mark Lancaster is looking forward to seeing the work of Shaw Trust in the local community: “Iain and I are very much looking forward to meeting Shaw Trust clients’ and employer partners to see what has already been achieved through the dedicated work which is taking place to help improve opportunities for the people of Milton Keynes”.

Shaw Trust is already helping people in the local area:
Ravinder, from Milton Keyes, came to Shaw Trust two years ago as he was suffering from issues with alcohol, and as a result was unable to find employment. Shaw Trust supported Ravinder by helping him get onto a counselling and alcohol detox programme at his local GP surgery. Once he begun to overcome his issues with alcohol, Shaw Trust developed a programme to help Ravinder find employment. Says Ravinder: “Through my work with Shaw Trust I managed to stop drinking and find a good job. I now work for Arriva as a bus driver, which I really enjoy, and even after two years, Shaw Trust is still supporting me in my job.”

Shaw Trust has strong partnerships with local employers:
Shaw Trust has formed strong working relationships with a number of employers in Milton Keynes such as John Lewis, Santander and local business CS Cleaning, helping them fill vacancies with job-ready candidates. Shaw Trust and MK Dons Football Club have also been working together since 2008 with 26 employees having been successfully placed in roles at MK Dons.

Ricky was successfully placed in employment with MK Dons following a tailored programme to meet his individual needs. When Ricky first started working with Shaw Trust he lacked the confidence and skills necessary to get into a fulfilling career. He was put onto a GOALS training course, which included skills training, motivation and self-esteems courses and CV and interview preparation which led to him getting a job with the football club. Says Ricky: “Shaw Trust was fantastic in putting me on the road to gaining long-term employment. Since starting work, both Shaw Trust and my employers have continued to support me, and my confidence has grown and grown”.

Shaw Trust is an active partner in the local community providing advice and support to help people with disability or disadvantage to find work and achieve independence.

“We are looking forward to welcoming MPs Iain Stewart and Mark Lancaster to our offices and having the opportunity to show case some of the work that has already been achieved in helping people in the local area with a disability of disadvantage gain employment and independence,” concluded Shaw Trust’s Katherine.
