Wayne Jeremy had been temporarily excluded from school on a number of occasions, when he was referred to Shaw Trust's Young People's Services (YPS) at 14. The YPS organised training to help him gain skills in construction, alongside his alternative curriculum studies.

He shone at a work placement at Bournville Village Trust Property Maintenance who went on to offer him an apprenticeship, which entails two days at college and three days on the job training. Their support was crucial in helping Wayne to change track.

Wayne was too busy at his apprenticeship to attend the National Awards in London, but said: "I wish I'd gone now, but I really didn't want to take time off and I didn't think for a minute that I'd get another award."

"I'm determined to do well for my dad, for Shaw Trust, who have done so much for me and for Bournville Village Trust, who have given me such a big chance to prove myself," he added.
