After receiving the regional member of staff STAR Award in London in July, a stunned Nik Brooks, collected his National Member of Staff STAR Award from Duncan Bannatyne last week. "To win two STAR Awards is a privilege and it's typical of Shaw Trust to take time to publicly congratulate their clients, staff and supporters. I feel revitalised and even more determined and motivated," he said.
Nik had struggled with bi-polar disorder since it was diagnosed when he was just 18 years old. Nik became depressed and decided to end his life under a train. Nik had to have both of his legs amputated after the accident and spent years in rehabilitation. He had managed to get his life back on track and started volunteering at Shaw Trust before applying for a full-time job as a mentor on the first base project.
Nik tells everyone he meets who is struggling to contact Shaw Trust. "Everyone should have the chance I did. Every person is worthwhile, with a lot to offer, and deserves every support."
