KEEN runner Shayne Green believes passionately in giving others a helping hand and when he discovered a charity that does just that he knew exactly who would benefit from his first London Marathon.
April 13 will see the 28 year-old IT manager from
"Shaw Trust is out there to try and give people opportunities and it seems to me a really good cause to run for, the more I read about the people they help the more I wanted to support them," said Shayne, who works for Broadway Tyres, in the town.
"It's very heart-warming to have a charity that is there to help people who need a helping hand, people who just need support to go in the right direction to start again. It doesn't happen enough in life and it's great to find a cause that does just this," he said.
A regular runner since he was 20, Shayne has tackled five milers, 10k events and half marathons: "I've just got to the point where I feel ready and capable to do a marathon and I'm also very intrigued as to how far I can push myself."
He hopes to complete the course in under four hours, cheered on his way by partner Nicola and aims to raise about £1,500 into the bargain.
"I've got loads of names on paper and have had great support from work where I've raised about £300 already," he says.
"I've got great support too from friends and family, I'm also going to be doing car boot sales. I also do private IT work for people so I'm calling absolutely everybody, even those I've not spoken to for years!"
