EVERYONE is a winner when Preston North End FC teams up with Shaw Trust, as successful Burnley businessman Philip Rothwell has found out.

Just before kick-off in the recent Crystal Palace game, the assembled Deepdale crowd saw Philip receive gift vouchers to spend in the club shop from Shaw Trust Employment Consultants Ian Crossthwaite and Drew Gale, and club Community Development Manager Andrea Troake.

The Lilywhites, who sent the Deepdale Duck and players to support the launch of the Preston welfare to work service over four years ago, have been a staunch supporter of Shaw Trust's work ever since.

The club donates two match tickets per month in a prize draw for people who register with Shaw Trust, which helps disabled and disadvantaged people achieve work and independence. It also promotes the charity in match day programmes when it announces the winners.

The special presentation to furniture restorer and upholsterer Philip helped to mark Shaw Trust's achievements in helping thousands of people throughout Lancashire.

Philip, who had chronic pancreatitis and clinical depression, was struggling to find work. He was helped by Shaw Trust to set up his business Traditional and Modern in Briercliffe, Burnley, last November.

The presentation marked the 54 year-old's first visit to the ground. "I wasn't a football fan or a Preston North End supporter before but I'm looking into it now," admitted Philip, who is already an avid fan of Shaw Trust.

"They're absolutely amazing," he said. "I don't suppose I could have done it without them, or East Lancs into Employment, Burnley Enterprise Trust and Burnley College. They all seemed to pull together."

"I really enjoyed the day at Preston North End and was really glad to receive the vouchers. Thank you to them – and Shaw Trust – for their help, and a really nice day."

Drew Gale was keen to thank the club for its help in promoting the charity's work, singling out Andrea Troake's efforts for special praise.

"She's wonderful and can't do enough for us," he said. Her help and support over the past year has been invaluable and very much appreciated."

Andrea commented: "Preston North End Football Club prides itself on its close relationship with the local community.

"Projects such as the one the Shaw Trust operates benefit disadvantaged people in the area and this is something the Preston North End will always be enthusiastic about supporting."

If you are claiming a sickness related benefit and want a winning shot at your goal of finding employment, please call the Preston office on 01772 761210 – you may well net those tickets to a Preston North End home game too.

Shaw Trust is a national charity, formed in 1982, which helps people with disability or disadvantage to find work and achieve independence.  We do this not only by delivering government programmes, but also through our own self-funded initiatives, and by campaigning to change attitudes at all levels. Across the UK more than 1,000 staff now oversee a diverse range of more than 120 projects. We work with over 50,000 clients a year.

Shaw Trust believes tackling the stigma surrounding mental ill health is crucial, which is why we are launching a free website in April to give guidance and advice to managers on how to support employees with mental ill health.
