Smiles all round for gift rapt footballers' wives

15 December 2006

ARDENT Doncaster Rover fans at Shaw Trust Industries, Doncaster, have got Christmas wrapped up for the busy footballers, who are preparing for their last ever competitive match at their Belle Vue stadium, against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Craftsmen from the national charity's social enterprise business have created bespoke handmade jewellery, in their favourite team's red and white colours, for the foobtallers' wives.

"We wanted to do something special for the team to mark the end of an era at Belle Vue, but we thought the jewellery would look better on the footballers' wives, and that the team would appreciate a little help with their Christmas shopping at a very busy time of year," said Shaw Trust Industries, Doncaster, manager Peter Smith.

The pretty handmade sparkling jewellery range is a relatively new sideline for the business that is run by Shaw Trust, which provides employment services for people disadvantaged by disability, ill health or social circumstance.

The main thrust of ST Industries Doncaster - which provides a supported work environment for some 30 employees and pumps all profits back into the charity - is the manufacturer of specialist plastic protective edging and plastic injection moulding, and it also provides powder coating, sub contract assembly and packaging.

Peter Smith and his team launched the jewellery range to provide more assembly work for employees whose disabilities mean that they cannot operate the factory's machinery.

"It has proved very popular and now we are looking for shops in the area who would like to provide an outlet for the jewellery," added Peter, who can be contacted on 01302 854531.

The organisation has long links with Doncaster Rovers, which was formed in 1879, by a group of young factory apprentices after they enjoyed a friendly match against a county team of disabled people.

Belle Vue, renamed the Earth Stadium, has been the Rovers' home since 1922, but the club is shifting to the new 15,000 all-seater Keepmoat Stadium, at the Lakeside Sports Complex. The team will kick off the first game in their new home in the Coca-Cola League One match against Huddersfild at 3pm on New Year's Day.
