History of Shaw Trust
Shaw Trust is a leading national charity that was registered in 1982 during the International Year for Disabled Persons. Shaw Trust originated in the village of Shaw in Wiltshire to help a small group of individuals achieve their employment aims. All were severely disabled, but each one had valuable skills and abilities. By focusing on what they could do, rather than what they could not, real jobs were found with employers. This not only meant employment and income, but independence, a sense of self worth and the chance to live their lives as integrated members of society.
What Shaw Trust does now
Shaw Trust is now widely recognised as one of the leading authorities on disability, disadvantage and employment, and is the largest voluntary sector provider of employment services for disabled people in the UK.
Shaw Trust now supports over 60,000 people a year across England, Scotland and Wales through job preparation, job finding, job support, job retention and job creation.
Shaw Trust currently finds jobs for, or supports in jobs, over 12,000 people a year.
Shaw Trust runs over 200 local projects designed to develop skills in key areas of employment, including: horticulture, retail, IT, catering, business administration, arts and crafts, printing, manufacturing.
Shaw Trust has a network of over 1,200 staff covering England, Wales and Scotland, who advise and support people with disabilities and employment disadvantages to return to or remain in work. 18% of our staff are disabled.
Shaw Trust has over 30 high street shops in England and Wales.
