George Skinner worked as a manual labourer and skilled tradesman in the construction industry until a lower back injury in 1985 restricted his mobility and ability to lift or carry so severely, he had to give up work. George undertook voluntary work within the local community but always felt he had much more to offer.
George was referred to Claire Taylor-Hatem, an Employment Recruitment Consultant with Shaw Trust. After a full assessment of his skills and experience, Claire and George explored alternative employment options and career opportunities, taking care to consider the impact of his disability on each choice.
With Claire's help, George decided he would like to try lorry driving as he had enjoyed driving in the past. The local labour market predicted a demand for this type of work and following an assessment and medical examination, George began his LGV course.
After successfully completing his driving test, George found a job with Blue Arrow, supported under the Government's Workstep Programme. He has not experienced any discomfort to his lower back and feels this has been a great career choice for him.
He said, "I would never have had the opportunities I've had without the support of Shaw Trust. I did not think there was anything else I could do. It feels so good to be working again, I'm now enjoying my life."
