Shaw Trust interviewed on BBC Radio Somerset
18 August 2011
Shaw Trust's Richard Hunt was interviewed on BBC Radio Somerset this week talking about the Trust's successful vocational rehabilitation pilot project in Manchester. The project, which supports people with cancer back into sustainable employment in a way that can aid recovery.
A Shaw Trust spokesperson said: 'Nearly 750,000 people of working age are living with cancer across the UK right now, and over 100,000 more are diagnosed each year. Almost 60% of people currently diagnosed with cancer have to give up their job or full time education, change role or reduce hours as a direct result of their diagnosis.
'During a time when patients need to concentrate on battling the effects of treatment, many patients find themselves focusing on other issues - their career and their ability to provide financial support for their family. Our pilot project helps people who have been diagnosed with diseases like cancer get the information, advice and support they need to enable them to stay in work or make a return to the workplace in a manner that aids rather than risks ongoing recovery.'
