Give and Gain Day 2010
Shaw Trust volunteers build accessible vegetable garden for children with disabilitiesOn 9 July 2010 the Corporate Social Responsibility team volunteered at a local Chippenham school for children with learning difficulties and disabilities to build a special vegetable garden as part of Give and Gain day, a national employee volunteering day which takes place every year.
We wanted to give something back to the community where Shaw Trust was founded so many years ago and increase awareness in the community of what Shaw Trust does.
The new vegetable garden has special features like raised beds and paving, to enable easy access for all the children, whatever their disability. The garden will allow the children to grow, and eventually cook, their own food. This will encourage and teach them about healthy and sustainable living.
We would like to thank everyone involved in making it a success. In addition to the Corporate Social Responsibility team, Timothy Goodman and his colleagues from Palmer Gardens in Trowbridge provided valuable expertise in horticulture. James Rogers from Salisbury also allowed us to use the project’s van to collect and deliver the materials that we required for the day.
We also accepted generous donations of compost, paving, sand, polythene sheeting and safety equipment from local businesses.
