The Times writes about 'Living with cancer'
6 April 2011
Ahead of the Times ‘Living with cancer’ special, Emily Ford has showcased the Shaw Trust project supporting cancer patients who want to return or remain in work throughout their treatment. The piece explains how Shaw Trust, along with Macmillan Cancer Support and Christie Hospital in Greater Manchester have helped hundreds of patients juggle treatment and work, and assist patients in finding work that it tailored to them. The article quotes Sally Burton, Chief Executive of Shaw Trust who highlighted the benefits of this new project that is filling a vital gap in employment services. Macmillan Cancer Support recently found that one in five employees with cancer will either change or even leave their jobs. The piece also mentions Richard Hunt, Case Manager for the Shaw Trust who works on the project. He found that patients do not fully understand their employment rights and that with simple adjustments, such as flexible working can help people stay in employment.
Emily also mentions the affect cancer has on young people, just stepping onto the career ladder. Mohammad Rahman, 20 was diagnosed with leukaemia 3 years ago. Through the Shaw Trust project he now volunteers in Oldham with teenage respite carers. He said that this volunteering has given him his independence back.
