Train to Gain

What is Train to Gain?

Train to Gain offers FREE work related training for employees and volunteers. It is a joint investment – employers and the government working together to boost business by improving the skills of employees.

You can link into Train to Gain if you are:
  • an employer
  • full or part time employee
  • self employed
  • a volunteer.
At present the Government is investing in employees and volunteers over the age of 19, who don't have the equivalent of five GCSEs (Grade A-C) or work related qualifications, like BTEC certificate/diploma; HND/HNC; GNVQ or Access course. Applicants also have to be UK/EU residents for three or more years.

Shaw Trust offers Train to Gain in Middlesbrough.  Find out who offers Train to Gain in other areas.

Benefits for employees and volunteers

For individuals, Train to Gain offers a cost free opportunity to achieve a recognised qualification which can:

Nationally Recognised Qualifications

National Vocational Qualifications or NVQs are nationally recognised. They are delivered in the workplace with the one to one support of a dedicated trainer who assists progress and assesses understanding. No previous formal qualifications are needed to work towards an NVQ - they are based on learning by doing and collecting evidence of skills. There are no exams or tests to sit and the content is separated into modules, so that they can be tailored to the skills and understanding required in a particular role.

Shaw Trust offers NVQs in:

Level 2 - Business and administration
Level 2 - Health and Social Care
Level 3 - Management

A level 2 NVQ is seen as the equivalent of five GCSEs and a level 3 equates to two A levels.

You can download further details about each of the qualifications below.

Whether you are an employer wanting to upskill your staff, an employee or volunteer, contact Lesley Cooke for an informal chat on how you can benefit from Train to Gain.
