Volunteering for Shaw Trust

The need for Shaw Trust's services is growing. We rely on volunteers' support to help us achieve our aim of empowering disabled and disadvantaged people. Without volunteers we wouldn't be able to provide so much vital support.

You Help Us, We'll Help You

Our volunteers do all kinds of jobs. You don't need any particular experience. Commitment, reliability, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to help others are the qualities we are looking for, and of course, to be able to spare a few hours each week.

Volunteering is a great way to pick up new skills and experience. We will provide any training you need through our own in-house training programmes or on the job coaching wherever possible. This is a good way to find out more about Shaw Trust and the difference our support can make to people's lives.
We are looking for volunteers to help us in:

  • Charity shops
  • Horticultural projects
  • Employment and training projects
  • Catering
  • Basic skills training
  • Head office support roles

If you are volunteering in a role where you are working with clients, you will need to undergo a criminal records check – these are free of charge for volunteers. Further information can be found on the CRB website or Disclosure Scotland website or in our CRB Policy.

Voluntary work is fulfilling and enjoyable. You'll have the company of like-minded people, make new friends, and develop your skills, as well as helping us to achieve our goals and empower other people.

Work experience through volunteering can enhance your employability, increase your confidence and help you to acquire new skills. You'll be given all the encouragement and support you need.

What to do now?

If you are interested in volunteering in one of our charity shops, it is best to either telephone or visit your nearest shop and ask to speak to the manager about any volunteering opportunities. A full list of our shops is available here.

If you are interested in volunteering in one of our projects or offices, contact your nearest Support Centre, tell them where you live and ask for the telephone number of any projects located nearby.

Alternatively you can complete an online contact form, indicating in the “Your Query” section what kind of volunteering you are interested in and where you would like to volunteer.

As part of the application process, you will need to complete a Volunteer Application Form and have an informal interview with the team in the office, project or shop where you will be working.
