What to expect

Shaw Trust aims to provide rewarding volunteer roles with the chance to develop your skills, gain satisfaction and be the inspiration to our clients.
The top 3 motivations for volunteering with us are:
  1. To give something back
  2. To share skills
  3. To meet new people
In addition, over a third of our volunteers feel they improve or gain skills from their role.
When you join us, you can expect on-going support from the local team you volunteer with, a chance to complete additional, relevant training, regular contact and support from our central volunteers’ team and reimbursement of reasonable out of pocket expenses.

Who are we looking for?

We look for certain qualities in our volunteers. These include commitment, reliability, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to help others. Most of our roles ask for a regular commitment of time, but we try to be as flexible as possible as to when and how you can offer your support, including remote or virtual volunteering opportunities.
Below is a list of skills we ask our volunteers to display and what roles they apply to. However, we do not always expect you to have all these skills straight away – many of our roles offer a chance to develop these as you volunteer with us. When you apply, we will have an informal chat with you first to discuss this.

Horticulture Volunteer at Walton Hall Social Enterprise
“I wanted to volunteer to make a positive impact in the community. I come to the project twice a week, and help out with anything that needs doing: helping with planting and potting-on, helping with the children who come here from the school for lessons, or maintaining the site. Volunteering here has brightened up my week and gives me structure. And it’s such a laugh! I’d be here every day if I didn’t have other responsibilities.”
