My year volunteering at Shaw Trust

07 June 2018

Name: Claire Rye / Local Store: Bristol

We recently caught up with, Claire. She’s been volunteering with Shaw Trust in Bristol for one year now; shares her experience and what she’s learnt so far.
Why did you choose to volunteer?
I chose to volunteer because I wanted to keep busy and active. With the time that I have to volunteer, I felt I should use it to help others and learn new skills.
What are your daily tasks and responsibility?
My role here is a Retail Sales Assistant. My main duties are to ensure the shop is kept tidy, sort-out the stock and price items that are denoted and help serve customers.
How has volunteering increased your skills and knowledge?
I have gained a lot of knowledge through volunteering as a retail assistant – helping customers find what they want and learning a new routine of work.
What has been the biggest change since taking on volunteering?
The volunteering has given me the confidence to talk with customers.
What has been your proudest moment?
The other week I sold £56 worth of goods in one sale; which really helped boost the store.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I really enjoy organising the shop, making the window displays stand-out and the shop looks good. I also enjoy providing good customer service.
What have you found difficult and how have you overcome this?
There was a time when I had to deal with a difficult customer. I got through this by keeping calm and patient.
What advice would you give someone looking to do volunteering?
Volunteering is good because it gets you out of the house and you learn new skills and experiences.
What’s your tip to finding the right volunteering position?
First think about what skills you would like to learn and be comfortable in what you’re doing.
Shaw Trust is a national charity providing employment opportunities, skills development training and health and well-being services across the UK.
