Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Opens New Shaw Trust Charity Shop

03 June 2016

Tristram Hunt, Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent Central, launched Shaw Trust's new charity shop in Hanley, raising money to support people into work. The charity shop on Stafford Street was officially opened during a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Tristram Hunt MP.

Shaw Trust is a national employment, disability, learning and skills charity, which works towards helping people of all abilities and backgrounds to learn new skills, find work and gain greater independence.

New Hanley Shaw Trust charity shopThe charity sponsors Shaw Education Trust, a multi-academy trust that runs six academy schools in Staffordshire. One of the schools, Walton Hall Academy in Eccleshall, also runs a horticultural social enterprise. The project provides both students at the school and people with learning disabilities from the local area the chance to learn horticultural skills and gain work experience.

The new Hanley charity shop offers a range of high quality clothing, accessories and household items, which have been donated for sale, and is a great place to find a bargain. The money raised from the shop will support Shaw Trust's charitable work in local communities.

Shaw Trust also has another charity shop in nearby Longton and is delighted to expand its presence in the local area by opening the Hanley store. The charity's stores are staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers and staff and also offer training and job opportunities to people experiencing unemployment in the local area.

Tristram Hunt MP, Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent Central, said:

"Shaw Trust provides important support to help people in Stoke-on-Trent to gain skills and find sustainable jobs. By sponsoring schools, offering employment support and a route to achieve skills through social enterprise in the local area, Shaw Trust is making a real difference in the community. Their new charity shop in Hanley will provide vital funds to support this work and I am delighted to help celebrate the launch."

John Canessa, Shaw Trust's Retail Director, said:

"Shaw Trust has strong links to the local Stoke-on-Trent area so we are delighted to open our new charity shop in Hanley. We hope the new shop will receive the same fantastic support from the local community that our charity shop in Longton has enjoyed."
