Local Councillors Open New Charity Shop in Walworth

30 September 2016

Councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE and Councillor Paul Fleming of Southwark Council officially opened Shaw Trust’s new charity shop in Walworth, on Friday 30th September. The charity shop, which forms part of Shaw Trust’s drive to raise money to support local residents in the area back into work, was opened during a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Councillor Lauder, alongside staff and volunteers.

Shaw Trust is a national employment, learning and skills charity that helps people to realise their ambitions and gain greater independence. The charity already runs social enterprise initiatives in Bromley and Harrow, delivering horticultural and wood recycling wood services, which make products such as shelving and furniture, that are sold in its charity shops. It also delivers Work Programmes as both a prime and subcontractor across London and Work Choice as a subcontractor in London.

Along with the social enterprise centres, and the newly opened shop in Stoke Newington, the new shop signals Shaw Trust’s commitment to building a strong presence in London and investing in the local community.
The new charity shop sells a range of clothing, household items and furniture, with all proceeds going back into Shaw Trust’s charitable work. It offers one of the best opportunities in Southwark to find a great bargain. All the items have been donated for sale, and the shop is keen to receive more donations from the local area.
All Shaw Trust Charity Shops are staffed by a dedicated team of volunteers and staff. The new Walworth shop will also offer training and job opportunities to help boost the job prospects of people experiencing unemployment in the area.

Councillor Lorraine Lauder MBE, said:
“I am delighted to be opening Shaw Trust’s new charity shop in Walworth. Shaw Trust provides an important employment support, helping people back into work by offering a route to achieving skills through social enterprise. I am pleased that the funds raised from the new charity shop will support this crucial work, as well as offer an avenue for the local community to give back through volunteering.”

John Canessa, Retail Director Shaw Trust said:
"We are delighted to be opening our second charity shop in London as we continue building stronger community links in the capital. We look forward to supporting local people with the funds raised in this shop."
